Harbor, 5 x 7", Oil on Canvas Board, 2012. This is one of many small paintings I did while on a plein air trip to Nassau, Bahamas. On this day, my art buddies and I set up our easels in a busy fish market overlooking a harbor of fishing boats. The locals were friendly, accommodating and chatty. One of the best things about painting on location is you get to know and understand a place so much better than a passerby. The sounds, smells, temperature and ambiance of a place get a chance to soak in to your soul. Looking at this painting, I can still bring to mind the musical Caribbean dialect, the smell the salt water, the fishy order of fresh conch and the feel of a cool island breeze.
