Marine to the Core, 20x16", Oil on Linen, 2014. I did this painting during a workshop I took with artist Rob Liberace. Rob is exceptionally talented. His knowledge and understanding of anatomy informs his paintings and he in-turn shares that depth of knowledge with the artists who take his workshops. The inspiring model in this painting is Rusty Brooks. He is a Marine and Iraq war veteran. During a break in the workshop Rusty told his story of brokenness from wounds he suffered, physically, mentally and spiritually and of the merciful recovery he experienced after meeting fellow veteran and MMA fighter, Chad Robichaux. Chad’s organization, Might Oaks Foundation, aims to assist wounded warriors in fighting back against PTSD, depression, suicide and substance abuse with a faith based approach that is uniquely suited to veterans. Rusty now shares his experience with servicemen and women who need to hear his story of recovery and hope. Available
