Vermeer Light, 14x11”, oil on linen, 2012. I have to admit. I'm jealous. My friend has the most beautiful north light window I have ever seen. One day on a visit to her house I asked if I could paint a still life there. She said yes, and I did, and here it is. Its title is inspired by Vermeer's north light window from which he painted many of his masterpieces. North light, also known as reflected or indirect light, is much sought after in artist studios. North light is consistent which avoids the sun moving through the studio at different angles during the day. This gives the artist far greater control over values and contrast.
