Daisies on Red, 8x8", Oil on Artist Board, 2012. This painting is from a still life class I teach. Often times in my still life set-ups, I will include transparent and reflective surfaces. I do this for a few reasons. I want my students to understand that they don’t have to “know” how to paint glass or silver or flowers. I tell them to stop thinking of an object as the thing it is, but rather as a series of connected shapes, values and hues interacting with one another. If you paint those things, the end result will be glass, silver, or petals.
